The school you’re applying to probably runs a year or two ahead of the public schools in your area. If the public schools in your area do Algebra I in 9th grade, the school you’re applying to probably does Algebra I in 8th (or even 7th) grade.

Private schools use tests like the SSAT, ISEE, and HSPT to make sure you can handle that level of academic rigor. Unsurprisingly, the most effective way to improve your score is to learn more advanced material. For example, learning next year’s math will improve your SSAT or ISEE score. (The SAT doesn’t work like that; learning Calculus won’t help you on SAT math. SSAT/ISEE training is very different from SAT/ACT training.)

My ISEE/SSAT/HSPT program helps students build academic skills and test-taking skills. I offer both private tutoring and group classes for each exam. My programs are academically rigorous, and built for students applying to the most selective independent schools.

Percentiles on these tests are different from percentiles on most standardized tests. Most standardized tests examine the skills of the entire student population. The ISEE and SSAT only test students motivated enough to apply to a private school. Thus, a 70th percentile on either test is actually pretty decent. Exeter, Andover, etc. usually expect a 90th percentile or higher. Almost all of my ISEE/SSAT students score in the 95th percentile or above, with many reaching the 99th percentile.
